In 1894 The Bata Shoes Company was established in Zlin, Czech Republic. In the beginning, it was 4 people, and they grew to 100k+ in some 80 countries over the period of 20 years or so. Along their journey, they also build a school for their managers. You couldn't become a manager unless you prove your expertise by the exam. And exam was from all parts of the company operations + people development. Two foreign languages were the norm, and practical experience from all departments in the organization was a must to make sure one understands business in its entirety

Today I mostly meet those 30 years old "managers" and I have to laugh at their "know it all" attitude when they need no advice.

My managerial experience says - management is a profession. One needs to get training and education, then work under supervision or with a coach. And finally, a few years later, or better a decade later, one can create an approach of his own. It is then about what the manager brings to management from himself - ideas, beliefs, styles, experimentation, etc. Simply Shu-ha-ri.

It would be great if I would have such a mentor at the beginning of my career, I have had to learn it all the hard way. And I am still learning.
